(2019 reviewed by us here) on his FRIGID resumé, and Blockbuster Guy sees him collaborating for a fifth time with director Kristen Keim, who also directed Lenny Bruce and with whom he won an award for. The show arrives in revised form at the 2020 annual FRIGID Festival after a 2019 run at SOLOCOM at the PIT Loft. Blockbuster Guy offers a humorous paean not only to how film can shape our lives but also to finding a sense of discovery and even community in the unlikely location of a now-defunct corporate retail chain. Right at the start of Mark Levy's solo show Blockbuster Guy, he announces that he always has been and always will be a movie nerd. The Soul's dashboard features soft-touch plastics with leather-grain detail, a faux-leather cover over the instrument panel, and, in our Exclaim test car, orange accent stitching. Plus, its upright seating position and excellent forward visibility give it the SUV-like driving experience that crossover buyers crave. From laid-back to peppy, there’s a Soul for every type of driver, and all trims benefit from a refined suspension that soaks up bumps easily yet can play on a curvy back road.ĮPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. With 201 horsepower on tap, it’s downright quick, and a heavy-throttle start will easily spin the front wheels. The Exclaim (!) trim, with its turbocharged 1.6-liter four and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic-our preferred powertrain-adds a big dose of fun and helps the Soul outrun its rivals by a wide margin. The Soul Plus isn’t quick, but drivers will feel more confident pulling out into traffic than with the base engine. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder of the mid-range Plus (+) model makes 161 horsepower and comes matched up to a six-speed automatic. The base model's 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 131 horsepower and can be paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The Soul’s three powertrains offer a range of performance, but they’re all nearly equally efficient. The new turbo four is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and this powertrain is offered exclusively on top-spec Exclaim (!) models. The biggest news in the lineup for 2017 is the addition of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which offers 201 horsepower and gives the Soul more, uh, soul. ![]() ![]() Sure, some rivals are better at carrying cargo or pampering their occupants with luxuries, but the Soul offers plenty to love inside its quality cabin and more practicality than you’d get from a run-of-the-mill hatchback. That it comes wrapped in an expressively styled package is the cherry on top. The boxy crossover embodies what small SUV shoppers want most: a handy, spacious, well-made, high-riding trucklet that is efficient and fun to drive. It’s the Kia Soul’s purity of mission that snagged it a 10Best Trucks and SUVs award for 2017. ![]()
